Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is an authentic 18th century scythe works. The house, workshops, crucible steel furnace, water wheels and dam create a unique atmosphere of life long ago.
Sheffield is famous for its steel, cutlery and tool making, the quality of its products and the skills of its workers. Cutlery manufacturing began in the middle ages. Benjamin Hunstman invented Crucible Steel here in the 1740’s and in 1913 stainless steel was pioneered in Sheffield.
Abbeydale is one of many sites that bring Sheffield ‘s rich industrial heritage to life others include Kelham Island Industrial Museum, Wortley Top Forge and the Metal Work Gallery at the Millennium Galleries.
